Toilet Training – A Family Affair

Getting your child to use the toilet is an important stage for children and parents. When things are not going well it can generate a great deal of emotions for all involved. It can be frustrating, overwhelming, and generate conflict between parents. These feelings can be felt by your child and make toilet training even tougher. So what can be done?

First check with your child’s pediatrician to see if the issue is physical. If the problem is not physical, it may be a control issue. If you have been working on toilet training for a while to no avail and it seems hopeless try the following:

  • Back off
  • As best you can, change your reaction to accidents
    • Show a calm, unruffled reaction to each accident
    • Perhaps make a quiet statement about how he/she unfortunately doesn't get the special treat and how sad that is but that he/she can always try next time.
  • Find a currency that will work with your child
    • A reward that is easy to give and your child values-make the reward something fun that the child truly enjoys
      • A treat box with things related to favorite activities - stickers, tattoos, figurines
      • Watching a favorite movie or show together
      • An ice cream treat
      • 10 minutes riding a small electric car.
  • Explain that when he/she can do this by himself, everyone will be proud of him/her
  • Always be prepared for an accident (bring a change of clothes along with wipes)

Despite how frustrating the potty training process may feel, try and keep in mind the following points:

  • Your child will be trained before they head to college.
  • You, your spouse, and child are in this together and can get through this challenge.
  • Everyone goes through it!
